The future of the world’s whales still hangs in the balance as countries like Japan and Norway continue to push to revive commercial whaling. The next stage in this struggle will take place at next week’s International Whaling Commission meeting in Australia.
Greenpeace is campaigning for the establishment of a South Pacific Whale Sanctuary. We have the support of the nations in the region, including Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific island nations. But Japan is opposing us, and is pressuring countries to oppose the resolution. Frankly, the vote is hanging in the balance, and it currently looks like we will lose by an agonizingly small handful of votes.
As a last minute effort, we have chosen three «swing» countries who could be encouraged to vote for the resolution: Ireland, and the Caribbean island nations of Dominica, and St. Kitts and Nevis. THESE THREE COUNTRIES COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE …

This is truly one instance where cyberaction could make a difference. The crucial vote is on July 4th. If thousands of emails and faxes reach these leaders in the next week, it would show them the global support there is for the South Pacific Whale Sanctuary.
